Lovella A. Nigg, age 91 of Haysville, Indiana, passed away at 4:10 pm on Wednesday, December 16, 2020 at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper, Indiana.
Lovella was born in Boone Township, Dubois County on August 9, 1929 to Leo and Annetta (Kieffner) Wening. She married Edgar E. Nigg on August 9, 1949 in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Haysville, IN. He preceded her in death on March 1, 2007.
She and her husband owned and operated the Nigg’s Super Market in Haysville.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, where she was baptized on August 24, 1929 by Pastor Karl Rodermann, and then confirmed on June 27th of 1943 by Pastor Ernest Boening. She was an active member of their Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, sang in the church choir for many years, taught Sunday School, served as a chairman for the St. Paul’s funeral dinners, and helped tack many blankets for the Lutheran World Relief.
On October 31, 1968 she was appointed State Water Ball Chairman at the State Fireman’s Convention, then helped organize the Haysville Fire Department Auxiliary, and then helped organize five different Fireman Auxiliaries in different communities. She was also a member of the VFW Post #673 Auxiliary in Jasper.
She and her husband were named Grand Marshalls of the parade for the 175th Anniversary of Haysville in 1991. Lovella and her family also served as the Grand Marshalls for the 2007 District 18 Fireman’s Parade in Haysville in lieu of her husband Edgar who passed away earlier that year and served as the chief for Haysville Volunteer Fire Department from 1961 to 1982.
She enjoyed helping people, cooking, playing cards and bingo.
Surviving are two sons; Levi Nigg (Pam), Jasper, David Nigg (Connie), Jasper, four grandchildren; Jennifer Nigg (Randy Clark), Madison, IN, Jonathan Nigg (Angela), Denver, CO, Matthew Nigg (Jessie), Carrollton, TX, and Zachary Jones, Jasper.
Preceding her in death beside her husband was one brother, Edward Wening.
Private funeral services for Lovella A. Nigg will be held at the Becher-Kluesner North Chapel in Jasper, with burial to follow in St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery in Haysville. Pastor Tim Holt will officiate.
