Loogootee man arrested for child abuse

JASPER — A Loogootee man was arrested Saturday after officers reviewed footage from the Jasper McAlister’s Deli in reference to child abuse inside the restaurant.

Officers were dispatched to the location and determined that the suspect and juvenile victim had left the scene. Clinton H. Burgess, 61, was located at his residence in Loogootee after a phone ping and state dispatch were done by Jasper Police Department dispatch. The victim was determined to be Burgess’ foster child.

After a review of the store’s footage, it was determined that Burgess had choked the victim as a form of discipline, and had slapped the child in the face. Burgess then dragged the child by his arm to exit the store before leaving in a vehicle.

Burgess was interviewed at JPD and arrested on two counts of domestic battery, a Level 6 felony, and strangulation, a Level 6 felony. The victim and his juvenile sister were removed from the custody of Burgess by the Department of Child Services.
