Locals nab top prelim finishesFebruary 15, 2013
From Herald Staff Reports
Swimmers from Jasper and Northeast Dubois claimed top finishes in Thursday’s boys swimming sectional preliminaries at the Jasper High School Natatorium.
For Jasper, Cole Erny and Mitch Mehringer both earned top seeds in their individual events. Erny’s mark of 5:14.07 in the 500 freestyle was more than nine seconds better than any other swimmer, while Mehringer powered to the top time in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.71).
Erny and Mehringer also teamed with Alec Vennekotter and Ben Nolan to log the top time in the 400 freestyle relay. The Wildcats finished in 3:37.28, nipping Vincennes Lincoln by 22 hundredths of a second.
Lucas Schulthies established the top-seeded time in the 50 freestyle, touching the wall in 22.20 — more than a second better than the runner-up.
The sectional will conclude Saturday at Jasper, with the diving prelimiaries set for 10 a.m. and the consolation and finals in all events slated for 2 p.m.
