Local business expanding to more than taxesDecember 5, 2019
By LEANN BURKE
FERDINAND — Betsy Corley wants to offer her clients solutions for all their business needs.
That desire led her to expand and rebrand the accounting firm her mother, Cecelia Hamilton, started almost 40 years ago.
In July of this year, Corley acquired Solutions Staffing of Dale, weaved it into her family’s successful tax and accounting firm — Hamiltons Accounting and Tax Service — and renamed the family business Solutions by Hamiltons.
Now, the business offers tax and accounting solutions, as well as staffing and employment solutions. The business, located at 530 Main St. in Ferdinand, will host an open house from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday to formally introduce the new side of the business and the expanded office space.
“It’s been a little bit of a crazy year,” Corley said.
But she’s excited about the new opportunities the addition to her business offers. The firm already handled insurance, accounting and human resources for its small business clients. It just made sense to add staffing to the mix and be a full service shop for small business owners looking to solve their challenges.
“We offer solutions,” Corley said. “That’s what I like to call it.”
As crazy as the transition has been, it’s also been exciting. Corley remembers when her mother first opened the firm in 1982 in the living room of their home on Ferdinand’s Main Street. Corley was 7, and she often performed cheers and gymnastics for the clients waiting in their living room.
“I had them cornered,” she said of her audience.
When she was 16, she started helping her mom with the taxes and discovered her own love of accounting. She pursued an accounting degree from Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky, worked in Louisville for a few years, then returned to Ferdinand in 2000 to work for her mom. Corley remembers that Hamilton was a tough mentor, but also credits her mom with teaching the professional skills that have helped Corley grow the business.
In 2008, Corley became a partner in the family business and is now the owner. Although retired, Hamilton still comes back to help out at tax time.
“She really loves doing tax returns,” Corley said of her mother. “Her degree was in accounting, and she just always loved the tax side of it.”
Corley’s sister, Chris Englert, also helps out during tax season. Like Corley, Englert helped Hamilton do taxes when she turned 16.
Carrie Sitzman is the firm’s other full-time accountant, and Sheila Boll handles the staffing. Lori Grundhoefer is the tax office administrator.
Solutions by Hamiltons is looking for new clients, particularly on the staffing side. Whether you’re a business owner looking for employees or an individual looking for work, Corley said, they can help. Their goal, she said, is to help businesses and individuals find each other.
