Local brewery, city nominated for ‘Best of Indiana’

Voting in this year’s Best of Indiana awards has started, and two Dubois County groups are in the running.

The 2019 awards are for best brewery, best hiking trails and best Main Street program.

People can cast their votes here. Five votes in each category can be cast every day until Nov. 3. The winner will be announced shortly thereafter, a spokeswoman for the Indiana Office of Tourism Development said.

The City of Huntingburg and Destination Huntingburg are in the running for the Best Main Street program.

Destination Huntingburg is a volunteer group dedicated to preserving the city’s history and encouraging community involvement through activities and events. The group hosts several activities in the community. Some of the more recent activities are the farmers market that occurs on Saturdays, film showings at different locations, filmmaking classes that are happening monthly at Current Blend and the annual Farmers Table that was held in August. The group will also host the annual Haunted Huntingburg Blues Festival on Saturday, Oct. 12. Destination Huntingburg’s goal is to develop and encourage an inviting atmosphere in Huntingburg.

Basket Case Brewing Company of Jasper is a contender in the brewery category.

The microbrewery was started in 2012 by BJoe Aull, Zach Lichlyter and Ben Nowotarski, and is housed in the Mill House Restaurant. The brewery offers seven kinds of beers, including one that uses coffee beans from Smalley Coffee of Jasper. Basket Case is up against 49 other breweries in the state.

“This year’s categories allow travelers to explore our small towns, enjoy our outdoor destinations and sample a brew from a local brewery,” Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch said in a announcement about the contest.

Other nearby contenders in the contest are the Town of Boonville and Boonville Now in the Main Street category, the Pour Haus Restaurant and Brewery in Tell City for brewery, and Hemlock Cliffs in Hoosier National Forest and the Adventure Hiking Trail in Harrison-Crawford State Forest and O’Bannon Woods State Park for best hiking trail.

The Best of Indiana campaign is sponsored by the Indiana Office of Tourism Development. Each year, different categories are chosen for the campaign. Last year’s categories were best burger, which was won by Brew of Jasper; best museum, which was won by the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis; and best state park, which was won by Turkey Run State Park.
