BIRDSEYE — Police sent to a Birdseye home late Tuesday night arrested a woman now accused of neglect.

The Dubois County Sheriff’s Department was dispatched at 11:05 p.m. to a welfare check at 30 Poplar St. The male who was the subject of the call was tended to by Birdseye Volunteer Fire Department first responders and Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services and then transported to Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center.

The sheriff’s department said living conditions at the residence were poor. Stephanie S. Neukam, 35, of that address, who is the mother of two juveniles, was detained and allegedly found to have a blood alcohol content that tested .159 percent.

After medical clearance was obtained for Neukam at Memorial Hospital because of her level of intoxication, authorities booked her into the Dubois County Security Center at 3:06 a.m. today on a preliminary Level 6 felony count of neglect of a dependent.
