IRELAND — One of the drivers in a car-versus-SUV collision Sunday afternoon in Ireland was taken to jail.
Gebener Quinonez, 19, Loogootee, was eastbound on State Road 56 in a 1997 Toyota Avalon when the 5 p.m. mishap occurred at County Road 500W, according to the Dubois County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies say Quinonez attempted a left turn onto County Road 500W but failed to yield the right of way to a westbound 2018 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Lawrence Vollmer, 71, Jasper.
The vehicles collided in the intersection and then, the sheriff’s office said, Quinonez immediately drove from the scene, traveling west on State Road 56.
Deputies located Quinonez at 5:09 p.m. about a mile west of the scene. The sheriff’s office said he was found to be driving while having never been licensed.
The crash totaled both of the vehicles.
Authorities booked Quinonez into the Dubois County Security Center at 6:27 p.m. on preliminary misdemeanor counts of leaving the scene of a property damage accident and driving while having never been licensed. Quinonez posted a $500 bond pending a court hearing set for Wednesday.
A Uebelhor & Sons wrecker and the Ireland Volunteer Fire Department also assisted.
