JASPER — The Jasper Police Department charged a man after investigating a leaving-the-scene accident Tuesday afternoon at the intersections of 47th and Newton streets.

According to a Jasper Police Department press release, around 1:20 p.m., while traveling westbound on 47th Street, a 2011 Mazda driven by George Veloz, 23, La Grange, Kentucky, failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with a 2003 Buick driven by Darwin Heckard, 55, Shoals.

The front of the Veloz Mazda slid into the front of the Heckard Buick, and the collision caused the rear of the Veloz Mazda to slide into the rear of the Heckard Buick. Veloz then left the scene.

Dubois County Sheriff's Office deputies located the Veloz Mazda at the intersection of 15th Street and Kellerville Road. After an investigation, Veloz was taken into custody and charged with leaving the scene of an accident, failure to stop at a stop sign and operating with expired plates.
