Charmian Klem of Bretzville, is the Republican candidate for the Dubois County Council District 3 seat.
Klem, 33, has been accounts manager for Steckler Grassfed LLC, her parents’ organic cheese and meats business in St. Henry, since May. She has also been self-employed as an independent beauty consultant with Mary Kay Cosmetics since August 2004.
She and her husband, Barry, have two children, Nora, 5 and Ty, 3.
Klem is a 1998 summa cum laude graduate of Heritage Hills High School with an academic honors diploma. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Southern Indiana in 2002 with a bachelor of arts degree in German and math education. During the summer of 2002, she studied at the University of Heidelberg, Germany.
Klem taught German and math at Heritage Hills High School from December 2002 to May 2005. During the 2005-06 school year, she served as a substitute teacher in the North Spencer and Southeast Dubois school corporations. She joined Riecker Chiropractic in Jasper in July 2006 as a chiropractic assistant and then Classic Bulk Carriers in Bretzville in March 2007 as an accounts manager. She held that position until Nora’s birth in December 2008.
She has home-schooled her children since January 2013. Her hobbies include gardening, walking and reading.
In 2009, Klem was the founder and first director of the Freedom Makers of Dubois County, a non-partisan group of concerned citizens seeking to learn about government and politics. She served as the Indiana District 9 steering committee member of I-Caucus, an independent political action group, from 2010 to 2012. She has been a volunteer for several candidates including State Representatives Lloyd Arnold and Mark Messmer, Lt. Governor Sue Ellspermann, Ninth District Congressman Todd Young and Richard Mourdock, who ran for U.S. Senate. She is a Republican precinct committee person in Jackson Township.
Klem is a member of Christian Church of Jasper. She serves as a teacher in the Spring Children’s Ministry and was publicity director for the 2013 Women’s Retreat.
The Dubois County Council District 3 seat covers Columbia, Hall, Ferdinand, Jackson, Jefferson and Marion townships.
