Kiwanis Club awards three scholarshipsJuly 17, 2020
FERDINAND — The Kiwanis Club of Ferdinand awarded three $750 scholarships on July 17 to Forest Park seniors Gryffin Flowers, Emma Hassfurther and Mallory Spayd.
Flowers is the son of Stephanie and Luke Flowers of Ferdinand. He served in several leadership positions such as National Honor Society president, class vice president and Student Council vice president. He was active in the Key Club, Community Impact, Students Against Destructive Decisions, Renaissance Club, Rangers for Christ, Beta Club and he was an integral part of the Science and Math Academic Bowl teams. He also was also a member of the soccer and track teams and served as varsity soccer captain.
He was active in his community through his volunteer service at St. Vincent’s Soup Kitchen and Store. He also helped set up for Ferdinand town festivals, did volunteer work at Hope Garden, and helped at numerous Kiwanis Club activities. He was a member of Christ the King Youth Group and was a vacation Bible school volunteer.
He will be attending Indiana University majoring in biochemistry and then pursuing a career in optometry.
Hassfurther, daughter of Valerie Hassfurther of Ferdinand, was a senior class valedictorian. She served in several leadership positions. She was the class secretary, National Honor Society vice-president, Beta Club vice-president, dance team captain and 4-H Club president. She was active in several clubs including Key Club, Student Council, Natural Helpers, SADD, Rangers for Christ, Beta Club, National Honor Society and dance team. She also was a member of Forest Park’s volleyball team earning a Mental Attitude Award, Pocket Athletic Conference and All-State Academic Awards.
She was an extremely active member of the Kiwanis-sponsored youth programs from K-Kids to Builders Club to Key Club helping at Ferdinand Kiwanis projects such as the pancake breakfast, fish fry and Christkindlmarkt. She also was a 10-year 4-H member and is a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
She will be attending Purdue University majoring in actuarial science.
Spayd is the daughter of Brenda Spayd and Scott Spayd of Ferdinand and also was a class valedictorian. She was involved in the Forest Park Dance Team, National Honor Society, Key Club, Beta Club, SADD
and Rangers for Christ.
She was a six- year member of Forest Park’s State Championship Dance Team. She also earned Beta Club recognition, was published in Autumn Voices, and has had her artwork displayed at Krempp Gallery.
She is an accomplished entrepreneur designing, producing and marketing her own line of handmade bags and wallets on a website she developed. She also is the guest services coordinator at Lake Rudolph.
She will be attending Indiana University Kelley School of Business majoring in marketing and graphic design.
