Kiwanis Club awards scholarships

FERDINAND — The Kiwanis Club of Ferdinand awarded scholarships on May 22 to Forest Park High School seniors Claire Mehling and Alex Weyer.

 

Mehling is the daughter of William and Sharon Mehling of Ferdinand. While at Forest Park, Mehling was a class valedictorian. She served as president of the Students Against Destructive Decisions and Beta Clubs and vice president of the student council and her class. She was active in a multitude of clubs including the Key Club, Community Impact, National Honor Society, Rangers for Christ and the science academic team. She was an integral part of Forest Park’s state award winning marching band. Mehling was an outstanding member of the soccer team, cross country and track teams winning academic and sports awards, most valuable player designations and mental attitude awards in all three sports. She was actively involved in her community and church serving as children’s liturgy of the word minister and a Mass server at Christ the King Parish. She was awarded the Saint Maria Goretti Youth Distinction Award. Mehling will be attending Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis majoring in biology and then pursuing a career in the medical field.

 

 

Weyer is the son of Chris and Donna Weyer. While a student at Forest Park, Weyer was a member of several clubs including Robotics, Beta Club, National Honor Society, Key Club, Rangers for Christ, FFA, Community Impact and Natural Helpers. Weyer was a member of the four times state championship Marching Rangers. He also was a member of the track and field team. He has served in leadership positions in band and the Robotics club and received awards in track and Introduction to Engineering Design class. Weyer is active in 4-H, serving as club vice-resident and treasurer. He has been active in Christ the King Parish attending and planning mission trips and winter retreats serving underprivileged families and areas. He was awarded the Saint Maria Goretti Youth Distinction Award. Weyer will be attending Purdue University majoring in mechanical engineering technology.
