Judge recuses himself in ex-IPWF leader’s case

By The Associated Press

FORT WAYNE — A federal magistrate assigned to handle a gender-discrimination lawsuit filed by the former chancellor of Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne has recused himself from that case.

Magistrate Judge Roger B. Cosbey issued an order Wednesday asking that another magistrate be appointed to handle Michael Wartell’s federal lawsuit against the university. The Journal Gazette reports the early stages of Wartell’s suit will now be handled by Magistrate Judge Andrew P. Rodovich, who works out of the district’s Hammond courthouse.

Wartell’s suit alleges that Purdue University’s trustees forced him into retirement in 2011 because of his gender. He was forced out under a Purdue policy that requires university executives to retire at age 65.

Purdue replaced Wartell with a 64-year-old woman, Vicky Carwein, who assumed the chancellorship of IPFW in September.
