JHS player nets USTA scholarship

JASPER — Jasper High School senior Luke Hochgesang has been selected as one of two recipients of the 2014 Tim & Tom Gullikson USTA Midwest Section Scholarship.

Hochgesang, who played No. 1 doubles as a senior, was a team captain and All-Big Eight Conference player and helped the Wildcats claim sectional, regional and semistate titles en route to the state finals.

Hochgesang participates in the USTA Junior Team Tennis program in Jasper, and off the court, he was involved all four years in the JHS student council. He is a member of the National Honor Society, volunteers at a local hospital and co-founded a youth mentor program at a local school serving at-risk youth. He plans to study engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

The scholarship was started in 1998 to help young players advance their education and tennis interests. Each year, the $2,500 scholarship is presented to one male and one female tennis player from the USTA Midwest Section, which covers all of Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Illinois plus most of Wisconsin and part of West Virginia.
