MOUNT VERNON, Ill. — A Dubois County truck driver escaped injury Friday morning when the tanker he was driving on I-64 on the south side of Mt. Vernon, Ill., overturned at the exit ramp to Illinois State Road 37.
Donald L. Weyer, 57, of Jasper was westbound on the interstate in a 2015 Freightliner pulling a tanker containing Ethanol at the time of the 4:41 a.m. mishap, according to Illinois State Police.
Troopers said Weyer was traveling too fast to safely negotiate the exit ramp.
The tanker truck went off the outside of the ramp and overturned. There was a small Ethanol leak but authorities, including a hazardous materials team, maintained a 1,000-foot radius around the scene as a precaution while the tanker was off-loaded and the rig righted. The cleanup took nine hours to complete.
Police said driver fatigue was a contributing factor in the crash. Troopers ticketed Weyer for driving too fast for road conditions.
