Jasper claimed sole possession of the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference championship with a 1-0 victory over Evansville North in an eight-inning pitcher’s duel on Thursday. Neither team could dent the plate through seven-and-a-half innings.
The Wildcats (20-2, 9-0) finally plated a single run on a two-out, RBI double, off the right center field fence by junior Megan Matheis to score senior Kendyl Ruhe from second base in the bottom of the eighth inning. Sophomore leadoff hitter Hillary Springer popped out to short for the first out of the Wildcats eighth. Ruhe followed with a groundball single to center then advanced to second on a third to first ground out by senior Mia Werner.
Then with two balls, two strikes and two outs, Matheis stroked a double off the right center field fence to score Ruhe from second to end the ball game, 1-0. The victory gave the Wildcats sole possession of the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference championship.
Werner picked up the win for the Wildcats, allowing no runs on four hits, 12 strikeouts and no walks over eight innings. Sophomore Maci Warner took the loss for the Huskies, allowing one run on five hits, five strikeouts and three walks.
Megan Matheis went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Wildcats. Fellow junior Kennedy Mathies was 1-for-3, while Werner and Ruhe each went 1-for-4. Sophomores Alyssa Wilke and Zoey Lewis, as well as senior Megan Chapman all went 1-for-3 and sophomore Rylan Jarboe went 1-for-4 for the Huskies.
The Wildcats are set today to travel to Owensboro to wrap up the regular season take on Breckenridge County Kentucky in game one of the Owensboro Catholic Invitational.
