JASPER — The Jasper High School Class of 2013 will graduate at 6:30 p.m. today in the new high school gymnasium. Valedictorian Zachary Paul Grewe, salutatorian Ethan Whitaker and Class President Kade Elliott will address the assembly of 233 seniors.
Grewe is the son of Robert and Karen (Riffel) Grewe of Jasper.
He has been a member of the marching and symphonic bands, choir, speech and spell bowl teams, German club, National Honor Society and freshman mentoring program.
He is a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Jasper where he was student representative to the religious education board and a member of the New Disciples Choir and teen Mass band. He was the student representative for the Actors Community Theatre board and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts.
He won the Outstanding Vocal and Instrumental Music Student award from the Jasper Philharmonic Club in 2012 as well as the Indiana Academic All-Star Award.
He received University of Pittsburgh Chancellor and Indiana Dairy Farmers Marching Band scholarships and plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh to major in neuroscience.
Whitaker is the son of Richard and Miriam (Adams) Whitaker of Jasper.
He has participated in the marching, pep and jazz bands, the track and field team, NHS and the Students Against Destructive Decisions, Natural Helpers and robotics clubs.
He belongs to the youth group at his church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Jasper. He has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts.
He was named a National Merit finalist and Outstanding Senior Band Student and received a gold rating on his Indiana State School Music Association trumpet solo.
He received a Trustees Scholarship from Purdue University in West Lafayette, an Academic Achievement Scholarship from Farbest Foods, a Lilly Endowment Scholarship and a Friends of Southern Hills Scholarship from Southern Hills Counseling Center. He plans to attend Purdue to study aeronautical and astronautical engineering.
