From Herald Staff Reports
INDIANAPOLIS — Norwell's Jonah Patten snapped a tie in the bottom of the fifth inning to help lift Norwell past Jasper in the Class 3A state finals at Victory Field in Indianapolis. Patten also singled to tie the game in the third inning. Both RBI hits came with two outs and both scored Josh VanMeter, who walked to lead off both innings.
Jasper scored its run in the second inning when Austin Alles singled, moved to second when Norwell misplayed Scott Stallwood's bunt and scored on Cal Krueger's RBI groundout. Spencer Otto and Devon Traylor delivered Jasper's other hits as VanMeter limited the Cats to three singles and worked around three walks while striking out eight.
Jasper's Nick Gobert tossed the first five innings and absorbed the loss — his first of the season and just the second of his four-year career. He walked two, allowed six hits and struck out four.
Mark Giesler fired a scoreless sixth.
After the game, Gobert won the L.V. Phillips Mental Attitude Award.
