Jasper Engines, school partnership recognized

From Local Sources

JASPER — Indiana INTERNnet honored Jasper Engines and Transmissions and Perry Central Junior-Senior High School Wednesday as its School Counseling-Business Partnership of the Year.

The recognition, developed by the Indiana Chamber Foundation to highlight innovative approaches to college and career readiness, comes during National School Counseling Week. The Indiana Chamber Foundation and the Department of Workforce Development jointly presented the award at the 12th annual IMPACT Awards Luncheon Wednesday in Indianapolis.

The partnership between Perry Central and Jasper Engines goes beyond the company offering internships to students (though it has hosted at least 13 interns over the last seven years). A student-led manufacturing facility, Commodore Manufacturing, through which students learn how to operate their own manufacturing facility, has led to the facility becoming a vendor for Jasper Engines and another local company. Jasper Engine’s brake pads were the first product line produced through Commodore Manufacturing, allowing students to implement their own work processes, quality checks and invoices.

Also, five years ago, Perry Central created an Advanced Manufacturing pathway, HIRE Technology program. Jasper Engines sends associates every other week, on average, to work with students, who can earn up to 12 hours of dual credit through the program.
