Jasper dentist’s journey leads to partnershipOctober 23, 2018

JASPER — A Jasper dentist who has practiced across southern Indiana has a special connection to his current workplace.
Dr. Alex Pfau, 33, has fond memories of his childhood visits as a patient at Brad and Kim Wilson’s dentistry practice on Northwood Avenue in Jasper. He always knew he wanted to work in health care when he grew up, but it wasn’t until he shadowed Brad while attending Jasper High School that he immediately fell in love with dentistry.
Pfau continued as an understudy and mentee to Brad in college and dental school, and eventually came on as an associate who worked a couple days a week at the practice in 2015. In August 2018, he became a full-time partner at the location, which is now called Wilson and Pfau Family Dentistry.
Pfau said the experience has been incredible. In an interview with The Herald, he thanked the Wilsons for being mentors to him over the years and entrusting him to join the practice.
“To be able to practice in the town where I’m from and in the practice I grew up in is just a great feeling,” said Pfau, who started visiting the Wilsons when he was just 2 or 3 years old.
While he was working as an associate at their practice, Pfau also held jobs in Vincennes and Bloomington during the past few years. Now, he only works at Wilson and Pfau Family Dentistry.
He said his childhood visits to the Wilsons were always good, because he never had any issues. His favorite parts of being a dentist are relieving patients of their pain and educating them that their teeth can affect their overall health.
“Pain in the mouth, for a lot of people, seems to be a lot different than pain anywhere else in the body,” he said. “Oral pain is just a big hindrance to a lot of people, and so helping people get out of pain is one thing, and also being able to change someone’s smile and self-esteem is pretty cool as well.”
Hearing from patients that they no longer hide their teeth and smile in pictures is also a rewarding feeling, he said.
Pfau lives in Jasper with his wife, Alicia Bies-Pfau, and sons Charlie, 3, and Michael, 6 months. He attended Indiana University Bloomington for his undergraduate studies, earned a master’s degree in biology at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, and attended dental school at Midwestern University in the Chicago suburb of Downers Grove.
Wilson and Pfau Family Dentistry is located at 288 W. Northwood Ave. in Jasper, and can be reached at 812-482-1855.
