Jail dryer malfunction singes inmate uniformsMarch 26, 2019

JASPER — Dubois County Sheriff’s Department deputies and Jasper Police Department officers joined jail staff in escorting some affected inmates to a secure area when a dryer malfunction singed some jail uniforms being laundered Monday night.
The Jasper Volunteer Fire Department was called to the Dubois County Security Center, 255 Brucke Strasse, at 10:57 p.m. after uniforms inside a dryer had caught fire, according to Fire Chief Kenny Hochgesang.
Uniforms singed inside the malfunctioning dryer unit were carried outside the facility, although some others were wet down in a laundry room sink. Firefighters set up exhaust fans throughout the facility to ventilate smoke, Hochgesang said.
Five trucks and 18 firefighters were on the scene 25 minutes.
The run to the security center came on the heels of two weekend runs by the fire department.
At 2:13 p.m. Friday, the department was called to Mehringer Metal Design, 919 E. 14th St., when a sprinkler line was bumped and damaged, setting off an alarm.
There was no damage.
Two trucks and 18 firefighters were on the scene 10 minutes.
Then, at 5:34 p.m. Sunday, the department responded to a report of the smell of gas at the Vine Street Lofts, 1316 Vine St.
There was no gas leak, according to Hochgesang. Instead, he added, the smell was traced to a dishwasher that a tenant stopped before it had completed its wash cycle.
One truck and eight firefighters were on the scene 10 minutes.
