PORTAGE, Ind. (AP) — The body of a teenager who went missing while swimming in Lake Michigan in northwestern Indiana has been found.
A Portage Fire Department diver found the body late Monday morning in about 7 feet (2 meters) of water near a break wall, according to Indiana’s Department of Natural Resources.
The (Northwest Indiana) Times reported Sunday that DNR officer Terri Millefoglie said the 16-year-old was among a group of five teens from Illinois swimming at the Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk.
They were caught Sunday by strong rip currents and pulled under the water.
Two got out of the water on their own and two were rescued.
Authorities searched into Sunday night, but were unable to locate the missing teen. The search was resumed Monday morning.
