Indiana church raises $1M for Bible translations

By The Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis church congregation has raised more than $1 million in donations to pay for new translations of the Bible.

The Indianapolis Star reports College Park Church on the city's north side collected the money as part of an annual tradition to raise money for a cause other than church operations. The offerings collected on the Sunday before Christmas often bring it more than $500,000.

Wycliffe Bible Translators of Orlando, Fla., will use the offering to translate the Bible into seven languages used by more than a million people in Asia. Wycliffe spokeswoman Vicky Mixson says it's the largest one-time donation from a single congregation in the organization's history.

Wycliffe has translated the Bible into about 700 languages. A translation can take 20 years to complete.
