JASPER — Police allege a motorist was impaired when the SUV he was driving crashed, stopping on its side Wednesday afternoon off St. Charles Street south of Schuetter Road.
Benjamin N. Claxton, 26, French Lick, was northbound on St. Charles Street in a 1997 Toyota 4Runner at the time of the 5:24 p.m. accident, according to the Jasper Police Department.
Police said the SUV went off the east side of the roadway and down an embankment. It struck a culvert and stopped on its side.
An investigation determined Claxton was intoxicated and he admitted to inhaling duster, police said.
Claxton was transported to Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center for treatment, police said. He will be charged with Level 6 felony operating while intoxicated (endangerment) and misdemeanor inhaling toxic vapors, according to authorities.
The crash totaled the 4Runner.
The Jasper Volunteer Fire Department, Indiana State Police, Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services and a Uebelhor & Sons wrecker assisted.
