INDIANAPOLIS — The Wabash Valley Correctional Facility reports that, on Saturday, Correctional Officer Gary Weinke, 67, succumbed to complications of COVID-19.
The Indiana Department of Correction said it was the first death of a state correctional officer as a result of contracting COVID-19.
March 29 had been Weinke’s last day working at Wabash Valley, according to the IDOC. It was later reported to leadership at WVCF that he had symptoms of the virus, and later tested positive for COVID-19.
Weinke’s wife, Naomi Weinke, is also a correctional officer at WVCF.
Acting Wabash Valley Warden Frank Littlejohn expressed condolences to Naomi as well as the fallen officer’s family and friends.
