Hospitalized House speaker handling businessApril 5, 2013

INDIANAPOLIS — The leader of the Indiana House spoke with senior Republican leaders from the hospital Thursday as he recovered from surgery for a knee infection, one of his top deputies said.
Republican Speaker Brian Bosma remained hospitalized from his surgery on Tuesday after the infection developed from last summer’s artificial knee replacement, said Speaker Pro Tem Eric Turner, R-Cicero.
“He’s doing extremely well and he’s very pleased with his progress,” Turner said. “He expects to be home Friday or Saturday to continue to recuperate.”
Turner said he spoke with Bosma for about 40 minutes Thursday morning about several issues pending in the General Assembly as it approaches its deadline to adjourn in a few weeks.
“He’s fully engaged,” Turner said. “We talked about a dozen bills that are in some part of the process.”
The 55-year-old Bosma has been the top House Republican — either as speaker or minority leader — since 2001.
Senate President Pro Tem David Long, R-Fort Wayne, said he had a lengthy conversation with Bosma on Wednesday evening about the Senate Republicans’ state budget proposal, which was released Thursday.
Bosma is absent as the General Assembly heads toward its April 29 deadline for adjourning the session. Major items still being debated include the new two-year state budget and Republican Gov. Mike Pence’s proposed individual income tax cut that Bosma and other GOP legislative leaders have resisted.
Turner said Bosma might remain away from the Statehouse for at least another week.
“I told him to take his time,” Turner said. “He can be engaged from home and we’ll manage the process.”
