From Local Sources

DALE — A Holland woman was formally charged last week with impaired driving and related charges stemming from an incident the prior week in Dale.

A Santa Claus Police Department officer reported responding to a dispatch at 8:34 p.m. CT April 9 reporting an intoxicated person at the Dale Liquor Store who was being belligerent with staff and would not leave the premises.

Police who made contact with Jean A. Smith, 52, 300 S. Meridian St., Holland, reported smelling the odor of an alcoholic beverage and noticing signs of impairment. Witnesses advised seeing Smith drive into the liquor store’s lot.

Smith’s blood alcohol content allegedly tested .128% in a certified test conducted at the Dale Police Department. While at the Spencer County Law Enforcement Center, authorities added, jail staff allegedly found prescription pills in Smith’s coat pocket.

Authorities formally charged Smith April 15 in Spencer Circuit Court with a Level 6 felony count of unlawful possession or use of a legend drug, plus misdemeanor operating while intoxicated and public intoxication.

During an initial court appearance Friday, the court appointed pauper counsel, set Smith’s next court appearance for May 22 and set her bond at $7,500 surety or $750 cash.
