Free income tax help available

Free income tax help and basic tax return preparation by IRS-trained volunteers for this tax filing season will be available beginning Friday, Feb. 1, for residents in the Jasper area.

There is no charge for this service and it is provided for individuals with income less than $56,000 and/or for those older than 60 regardless of income. This service is not for business tax returns.

Volunteers will be at the Arnold F. Habig Community Center between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. each Friday until April 5. Call 812-482-5959 or 812-482-4455 for an appointment. Call early as appointments fill quickly. Walk-ins can only be accepted in the event of a late appointment cancellation.

People are asked to bring their driver’s license or photo identification, a social security card for each adult and child, all W-2 and 1099 forms, Social Security income, any other income statements, last year’s tax return statements (federal and state) and documentation of health insurance paid in 2018.

If renting, bring the landlord’s name and address and total amount of rent paid for the year. People who own their residence are asked to bring their property tax paid in 2018.

Free e-filing (both federal and state) will be available. All tax information will be confidential.
