Four Downs: 11/1

Panthers @ Wildcats

Teams: Evansville Reitz (8-3) at Class 4A No. 2 Jasper (11-0), 8 p.m. Friday, Jerry Brewer Alumni Stadium
Series: Reitz leads 4-2.
Last meeting: In the sectional opener in 2010 at the Reitz Bowl, the Panthers prevailed 47-20, handing Jasper its lone loss of the season.

1. Jasper has advanced to the sectional title game in 10 of the last 12 years. In coach Tony Ahrens’ 10 seasons, the Wildcats have compiled a 18-7 sectional mark.

2. Nick Gobert (Sr., LB), Adam Goepfrich (Sr., DE), Devon Traylor (Sr., LB), Moises Valenciano (Jr., DT), Spencer Otto (Jr., DT) and Austin Alles (Soph., DE) all have at least six tackles for loss, and Ryan Betz (Sr., DB), Brayden Betz (Jr., DB) and Courtland Betz (Jr., DB) have combined to break up 18 passes for a defense that allows 9 ppg, the best mark among Class 4A teams. Outside of the fourth quarter, the Cats have outscored their foes 332-42.

3. Jasper’s top five pass catchers — Jesse Schmitt (Sr., WR), Austin Alles (Soph., TE), Dillon Wagner (Sr., TE), Gobert (TE) and Zach Wood (Jr., WR) — help the Cats average 17.8 yards per catch. The only other time the Cats have gained more yards per completion this decade was in 2009.

4. Since losing to Louisville Central, Castle and Evansville Central in succession, Reitz has won seven in a row. The Panthers have scored 40 or more points in five straight games, including last week’s 43-42 OT win over Central. The Panthers won on a two-point conversion pass from Drew Johnston (Sr., QB) to Mason Schnarr (Sr., WR/LB). Johnston has completed 68 percent of his passes, totaling 1,405 yards, 16 TDs and eight interceptions. Jordan Summers (Jr., WR/DB) has 52 catches — nobody else has more than 18 — and has picked off seven passes. Schnarr paces the defense with 75 tackles. KeAndre Vaughn (Sr., RB) has rushed for 1,265 yards and 19 TDs. In 2010 against Jasper, Vaughn, the program’s all-time leading rusher, rumbled for a 48-yard touchdown.
