JASPER — The Jasper Police Department made arrests Thursday afternoon in connection with residential burglaries in the city earlier this month.

Alex D. Plake, 18, of 314 W. 14th St., and a 17-year-old male whom authorities are not identifying because he is a juvenile are charged with three Class B felony counts of residential burglary and one Class B felony count of attempted residential burglary.

Plake was booked into the Dubois County Security Center at 2:20 p.m. Thursday. The juvenile was lodged at the Southwest Youth Village in Vincennes but could be waived into adult court next week, according to detective Sgt. Rick Chambers.

Jasper police said their charges stem from an ongoing investigation by Jasper police and the Dubois County Sheriff’s Department.

Authorities said Plake and the juvenile are charged with an April 2 burglary in the 1400 block of Dewey Street and an attempted burglary that same day in the 2600 block of Dewey Street, an April 5 burglary in the 400 block of west Ninth Street and an April 11 burglary in the 1400 block of Greene Street.

Items taken during the burglaries included electronic devices, XBox and Playstation 3 games, computers, TVs, jewelry and cash.

Additional charges against the pair are likely because police said during questioning the two admitted to an April 12 burglary in the 1400 block of West Magnolia Street. That crime is being investigated by the sheriff’s department.

JASPER — Suspicions about a Jasper High School student parking off campus resulted in an arrest Thursday morning.

A county sheriff’s deputy checking on a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer parked at St. Charles Street and Cobblestone Road by 18-year-old Paul J. Varner, 920 Brandon Ave., summoned an Indiana State Police trooper and his K-9 partner to the scene.

Police said the K-9 alerted to the vehicle but Varner declined to open it for a search upon being contacted by authorities. Officers obtained a search warrant from Dubois Superior Court and conducted a search. Items they reported finding included a small amount of marijuana, baggies, scales and two bottles of vodka.

Authorities arrested Varner and booked him into the county security center at 10:50 a.m. on Class D felony counts of dealing less than 30 grams of marijuana and maintaining a common nuisance, plus misdemeanor counts of paraphernalia possession, minor in possession of alcohol and marijuana possession.

Varner posted bond at 4:35 p.m.

CRYSTAL — An SUV was able to be driven from the scene of a Tuesday morning collision with a deer east of Crystal.

Shirley J. Probasco, 59, of West Baden was westbound on State Road 56 in a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer when the 5:25 a.m. accident occurred near County Road 960E, according to authorities.

A sheriff’s deputy said a deer entered the roadway and ran into the driver’s side of the vehicle.
Damage was estimated to have exceeded $2,500.

The deer was not located after the accident.
