Flag essay wins at state level

Miranda Rickelman was presented an award for her flag essay by American Legion Post 124 members Stan Fischer and Buckey Honaker and 8th District Commander Sue Hunt.

FERDINAND — A flag essay written by Ferdinand Elementary fourth grader Miranda Rickelman won at the district level and she was named the female state champion for the 2018-19 American Legion Flag Education Contest.

Miranda, daughter of Mike and Angie Rickelman, is a social studies student of Tina Goffinet and a homeroom student of Denise Heilers. Students in Mrs. Goffinet’s social studies class participated in the flag education program during November. The fourth graders learned about the flag’s history, flag etiquette, and also about the rich symbolism of the Unites States flag. Students were then given an examination over flag facts and asked to write an essay about what the flag means to them.

Miranda scored 100 percent on the exam and wrote an award-winning essay. She received $50 from the American Legion for winning at the school level, another $50 for winning the district and will receive a $1,000 check for winning at the state level.

Miranda and her family have been invited to the American Legion’s annual state convention in Indianapolis in April, where Miranda will read her award-winning essay.
