Firefighters tackle field fire, caution residents

HUNTINGBURG — Members of the Huntingburg Volunteer Fire Department responded to a field fire just south of Huntingburg Sunday afternoon.
Units were called at 3:04 p.m. to the Diane Lange residence at 7780 S. 200W after embers from a shrubbery clipping fire spread into a brushy, one-quarter-acre area, according to department fire investigator John C. Smith.
Four trucks and 17 firefighters were on the scene 45 minutes.
Smith cautioned residents that even though the ground is soft and damp, their brown yards constitute a ground covering of easily combustible dead vegetation. Any open burning should be accompanied by appropriate control measures, like having a garden hose at hand, Smith said.
