CUZCO — Fire destroyed a barn just east of Cuzco Friday morning.
Units of the Dubois Volunteer Fire Department were called to the Mike Trout property at 6691 N. Cuzco Road North at 9:20 a.m.
Fire Chief Steve Kalb said the roughly 30-by-50 barn was engulfed and caving when firefighters arrived. No other structures were threatened, but 25 chickens and seven ducks inside the barn perished.
Kalb said the homeowners reported hearing a rumble-like sound, investigated and discovered the fire.
No cause was determined, but the barn did have electrical service so it was possible the blaze was electrical in nature, according to Kalb.
The structure was insured.
Two trucks and 20 firefighters were on the scene for an hour.
Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services and a Dubois Rural Electric Cooperative crew assisted.
