JASPER — An early morning fire today destroyed a man’s car north of Jasper.
Loren R. Harrison of Shoals was northbound on U.S. 231 when the gauges and switches inside his 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse started blinking and malfunctioning as he drove north of County Road 500N at 3:16 a.m., according to the Dubois County Sheriff’s Department.
Harrison, who was headed home after finishing his shift at Farbest Foods in Huntingburg, told a deputy the brakes of his coupe also were starting to fail as he tried to stop. He called for assistance as he noticed flames coming from under the car’s hood.
The Haysville Volunteer Fire Department responded and extinguished the flames. The Jasper Police Department also assisted.
The response to the vehicle fire closed U.S. 231 north of Jasper for about 45 minutes.
