JASPER — Fire damaged a carport and attached shed Saturday afternoon on Jasper’s south side.
Units of the Jasper Volunteer Fire Department were called to the Jeremy and Sherri Swango residence at 730 Third Ave. at 3:22 p.m.
Fire Chief Kenny Hochgesang said the carport and shed are attached to the home. An electrical fire started in the shed, which is attached to the carport. Flames in the ceiling area resulted in fire damage inside the carport and attached shed. The home living area sustained only smoke damage, according to the chief.
Hochgesang said the residents were able to remain in the home.
Damage was estimated at approximately $20,000.
Four trucks and 29 firefighters were on the scene 45 minutes.
The Jasper Police Department, Dubois County Sheriff’s Office and Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services assisted.
Earlier in the weekend, at 7:09 p.m. Friday, the department was called to a woods fire at the Lawrence and Christy Loner property at 4225 W. Ruby Court.
Hochgesang said winds spread fire from a controlled burn of brush, burning a 30-by-30 area.
Two trucks and 23 firefighters were on the scene 30 minutes.
