Fire contained to Jasper plant’s grinder machineAugust 17, 2018
From Local Sources
JASPER — Units of the Jasper Volunteer Fire Department responded Thursday afternoon when a fire started in a grinder used for processing wood waste at the Jasper Group plant at 305 E. 12th Ave.
Fire Chief Kenny Hochgesang said plant personnel used a nearby garden hose to wet down the grinder fire that started when a piece of metal made its way into the chipper bin along with wood waste. That action kept embers from entering into the plant’s dust collection system, according to the chief.
“We were fortunate that (the fire) stayed where it was at,” Hochgesang said.
The chief added that the plant’s Flamex spark detection and extinguishing system inside the dust collection pipes did not activate.
The fire department was called at 1:47 p.m.
Five trucks and 28 firefighters were on the scene 35 minutes.
