Ferdinand police chief steps down

From local sources

FERDINAND — Ferdinand Police Chief Ted Bieker announced at the town council meeting Tuesday night that he will step down as chief at the end of the day Thursday.

The council appointed Lt. Rob Randle, second in command for the department, as interim chief beginning Friday. Bieker, who was appointed as chief in April 2004 and has been with the department for 24 years, will remain on the force as a patrol officer and return to his former rank of captain.

Bieker read a four-page letter to the council regarding his decision, in which he noted ongoing tension between himself and the council and Town Manager Marc Steczyk. Bieker said the three council members asked him to resign in individual meetings which he had with them earlier this month. The council members later confirmed those meetings.

A couple of residents, including a former town council member, spoke in support of Bieker and criticized the council for its handling of Bieker's situation.
