Ferdinand issues flushing warning

From Local Sources

FERDINAND — The Town of Ferdinand is reminding its wastewater customers not to flush anything other than toilet paper down toilets.

In a press release Monday morning, Wastewater Superintendent Roger Schaefer said that other materials — such as flushable wipes, paper towels, Kleenex and feminine hygiene products — do not break down the way that toilet paper does and will quickly clog wastewater pipes. They should be disposed of in a wastebasket.

“It is important to keep in mind that flushing anything other than toilet paper can create expensive and unsanitary problems for homeowners and businesses,” the press release says.

According to the press release, the flushing of flushable wipes is not a new concern, but it has become worse with the COVID-19 outbreak. Wastewater staff have also seen diapers, gauze and band-aids in the pipes recently. Those items should never be flushed.
