HUNTINGBURG — A Spencer County motorist’s evasive action Thursday night sent his car offroad.
Dennis W. Forler, 78, Santa Claus, was southbound on U.S. 231 in a 2009 Buick LaCrosse when the 10:50 p.m. mishap occurred north of County Road 1100S, according to the Dubois County Sheriff’s Department.
Forler stated a small animal ran out into the roadway in front of him and he swerved to avoid it, according to the sheriff’s department.
The Buick ran off the west side of the highway and drove over rip-rap rock in a field. A deputy said the rip-rap rock damaged the passenger-side of the LaCrosse, flattening both passenger-side tires.
Forler was able to slowly drive across the field and into a driveway where a Uebelhor & Sons wrecker towed the car because of the disabling damage.
Damage was estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.
