Essay contest open to high schoolers

The Dubois County Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution invites all Dubois County high school students to enter the 2019-20 Christopher Columbus Essay Contest.

Students are invited to submit an essay of 800 to 1,200 words on the topic, “A Sailor’s Experiences as Part of Christopher Columbus’ First Expedition to the Americas.”

Christopher Columbus’ first expedition set off in August 1492. He and his men explored the Caribbean for five months after arriving there in October. The writer should imagine himself to be a sailor who accompanied Christopher Columbus on this voyage and who has now returned to Spain. The essay should describe the writer’s impression of Christopher Columbus and perception of the purpose of the expedition. Also included would be experiences on the voyage, descriptions of the places and people encountered, and the significance of the discoveries made.

The deadline to submit entries is Thursday, Oct. 31. A countywide winner will be chosen and then forwarded on for state competition. The state winners will then compete at the national level.
