There were no tricks, but lots of treats, for local runners in Saturday's cross country state finals at Terre Haute. Two Jasper runners, in particular, were treated to a reward after they both met a goal of theirs.

Juniors Abe Eckman and Andi VanMeter each medaled on their respective side for the Wildcats. Eckman ran a time of 15:57.2 to finish 12th overall in the boys race. VanMeter ran a time of 18:45.9 and came in 16th place on the girls side.

Jasper was the only local school on either side to field a team at state on Saturday. The boys finished in 14th place with 375 team points, with Columbus North being the state champions with 63 points. Southridge senior Dylan Bland finished his career getting 72nd with a time of 16:42, while Forest Park junior Spenser Wolf got 37th behind a time of 16:22.5. Heritage Hills senior Elliott Buechlein finished his career in the top 100, getting 90th overall at 16:51.2.

Jasper's girls finished 17th with 416 team points, and Carmel won the state championship with 52 team points. Heritage Hills senior Katie Winkler finished in 58th place, as she ran a time of 19:42.8.
