Dubois County alums highlight Bombers squadFebruary 20, 2018
From Herald Staff Reports
This year’s Dubois County Bombers roster will feature three players from the home county as two Jasper Wildcat alums along with a Southridge Raider grad were named to the Ohio Valley League defending champion’s roster on Monday.
Outfielder/first baseman Evan Aders and right-handed pitcher Reece Kleinhelter are the two Jasper alums while third baseman Payton Mattingly of Southridge will also join the Bombers this season.
Aders and Kleinhelter were both members of the Jasper squad that went to the IHSAA Class 3A Baseball State Finals last season before being defeated 4-0 by South Bend St. Joseph’s at Victory Field in Indianapolis.
Aders was named the L.V. Phillips Mental Attitude Award Winner during the championship game. He was the ninth Jasper baseball player to earn the Mental Attitude Award.
Aders is playing collegiate baseball at the University of Evansville and is expected to make an immediate impact for the Aces right away as a freshman. Aders is joined on the roster by Evansville teammates infielder Cooper Trinkle and infielder Tanner Craig.
Kleinhelter is a freshman at the University is a Southern Indiana which is a common ground for the Bombers to look for talent. Kleinhelter is joined by a plethora of Screaming Eagles — junior catcher/first baseman Jayden Beshears, freshman outfielder/right-handed pitcher Sam Mudd and sophomore infielder Trevor Ricker.
Ricker joins right-handed pitcher Renton Poole (IU-Kokomo) and outfielder/second baseman Jaxson Blair (Eastern Kentucky) as the only returning members from last year’s Bomber championship squad.
Mattlingly is currently in his sophomore season at Olney Central College, after graduating from Southridge in 2016, which is another common stomping groud for Bomber players as manager Andy Lashley also coaches at Olney.
This year, the fellow Olney Central teammates are right-handed pitcher Luke Fifton, outfielder Evan Kahre, right-handed pitcher Kevin Davis and first baseman/pitcher Dillon Tobe Whitten.
Other notable members on this year’s roster include infielder/outfielder Nick Gonzalez from New Mexico State and catcher Gavin Napier from Indiana University.
The Bombers will kick off their regular season at home at League Stadium in Huntingburg on May 31.
