Downed wire closed street

JASPER — A semi pulled down a pole and electrical wires Tuesday afternoon at Mill and 11th streets, causing the area to be closed to traffic for about an hour.

David Trapp, 52, of Evansville was driving a 2013 Volvo semi and trailer west on 11th Street and attempted to turn onto Mill Street at 5:30 p.m. The trailer caught a telephone pole wire owned by Frontier, the Jasper Police Department reported. The semi pulled the wires, which caused the pole to break and fall onto 11th street, blocking traffic, police said.

Trapp told police officers that he was following the directions given by a GPS, which had him turn from U.S. 231 onto 11th, and then to Mill Street. Mill was closed to traffic for about an hour because of low-hanging wires, police said.

Police did not give estimated damages for the pole, wires, semi or trailer. No one was cited in the incident.
