Cruz named Optimist Youth of the MonthMarch 4, 2020
Jaffet Valencia Cruz, 18, son of Wenceslao Cruz and Yessica Valencia, is the Huntingburg Optimist Youth of the Month for February.
As a result of his academic success, he was inducted into the National Honor Society and has been the recipient of the corporation’s academic success award each year of high school. He is also a candidate for valedictorian.While in high school, Cruz has been a member of the spell bowl where he was the leading scorer all four years of high school. He also ia a natural helper and is a member of the student council. He was the team captain for cross country and has also been a member of the track and field team.
Some of his awards include his nomination to attend the Richard Lugar symposium, his nomination for the Rising Star of Indiana for the Class of 2020 award and he was recognized by the National Hispanic Scholarship Program. As a junior, he was recognized as the first team Academic All State team for track and field.
Outside of school, Criz is a member of the Huntingburg Mayor’s Youth Council and a member of the United Methodist Church. He spends his time volunteering for the little Raiders basketball camp, working at concession stands for various groups and helping with 5K’s. He also works part-time at IGA in Huntingburg.
Cru plans to attend college in Indiana and hopes to study either engineering or business.
