From Local Sources
JASPER — A medical issue is believed to have led to a crash Monday afternoon on Cathy Lane.
Paul D. Bateman III, 73, Jasper, was northbound on Cathy Lane in a 2008 Chevrolet TrailBlazer when the 2:36 p.m. accident occurred east of Terry Lane, according to the Jasper Police Department.
Police say Bateman experienced some type of medical issue as his SUV approached the 90-degree curve on Cathy Lane. The TrailBlazer drove into a guardrail, crossed the centerline and struck a mailbox on the south side of Cathy Lane before stopping in the street’s eastbound lane.
Bateman was transported to Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center for medical issues, police said. An officer cited him for not having a valid driver’s license.
Damage was estimated at $7,500 to the SUV, $500 to the City of Jasper guardrail and $100 to the Meyer Distributing mailbox.
Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services and a Uebelhor & Sons wrecker assisted.
