Road to regional: Jasper sectional — crunched Washington 13-0 in six innings, doubled up on Vincennes Lincoln 10-5 and routed Heritage Hills 13-0 in five innings. Jasper regional — stopped No. 4 Silver Creek 5-1 and doused Gibson Southern 5-0.
Team tidbits: Jasper has achieved the eighth 30-win season in program history. This year’s Cats have already matched the 1996 team (31-5) for third-most wins in Jasper history. The only teams with more wins are the 1992 squad (32-2) and the 2006 group (34-1). ... With his last double against Heritage Hills in the sectional championship, Mark Giesler became Jasper’s career leader in doubles with 40; that broke Scott Rolen’s record of 39. With 45 RBIs this spring, Giesler also ranks seventh on the Cats’ single-season list, joining current JHS pitching coach Phil Kendall who also drove home 45 runs in 1996. ... Also inching up the career charts is Nick Gobert, whose 21-1 career pitching record is the eighth-most wins in Jasper history. Mike Ballenger’s 28 wins top the list, and JHS athletic director Andy Noblitt (26) ranks second. ... Jasper coach Terry Gobert recently passed 650 wins for his career; the 26th-year head coach sports a record of 653-196 for a .769 winning percentage. ... The four teams remaining in the Class 3A tournament — Jasper, Crawfordsville, Norwell and Western — have combined to win five of the last seven state championships. Jasper prevailed in 2006, Norwell reigned in ’07, Crawfordsville claimed championships in ’08 and ’11 while Western grabbed the 3A crown last season.

Road to regional: North Montgomery sectional — ripped North Montgomery 11-1, blasted Southmont 13-2 in five innings and outslugged North Putnam 12-7. Mt. Vernon (Fortville) regional — dismissed West Vigo 5-1 and edged defending state runner-up Indianapolis Brebeuf 5-3.
Team tidbits: Crawfordsville and Jasper last tangled in 2006, when the Wildcats won 6-1 in the semistate semifinals en route to the state title. ... Shortstop Jake Zurawski and center fielder Jordan Jackson both started as sophomores on the Athenians’ 2011 state champion squad. Jackson cracked two doubles and added two runs and two RBIs, while Zurawski singled and scored in the 8-3 triumph over Mishawaka Marian for the state crown. The Athenians’ 2008 state title also came at the expense of Marian, with Crawfordsville winning 5-1. ... Jackson’s .376 average leads Crawfordsville, which hits .292 as a team; Dane Baldwin (.318), Chandler Pursell (.305) and Logan Meadows (.303) are the other top hitters. ... Pursell (11-2, 2.12 ERA), the likely semistate starter, handcuffed West Vigo with a four-hitter in the regional semifinals and didn’t surrender a run until the seventh inning. The Athenians can also turn to Connor Smith
(6-0, 1.94), who struck out nine in the regional final against Brebeuf and took a one-hitter into the seventh inning. ... Crawfordsville broke a 6-all tie in the sixth inning to sneak by North Putnam in the sectional and extend its sectional streak to eight in a row. That’s the second-longest active sectional streak in the state behind Andrean (12).
