DUFF — Firefighters listed the cause of a roadside tree fire Thursday southeast of Duff as undetermined.
The Huntingburg Volunteer Fire Department was called to a point near a 90-degree turn on Duff Road Southeast north of County Road 500S at 9:46 a.m.
Department Fire Investigator John C. Smith said a dead tree was on fire with the point of origin appearing 10 to 15 feet off the ground. The cause was a mystery because power lines were located on the opposite side of the road, there had not been any recent storms and there was no fire on the ground, where green vegetation surrounded the tree.
Firefighters used a chain saw to bring down the dead snag so the department could ensure the fire was out. The department then had the Dubois County Highway Department bring a trackhoe to the location to remove the tree.
Two trucks and seven firefighters were on the scene 45 minutes.
The Dubois County Sheriff’s Office assisted.
