Cats offense dominates in road win

From Herald Staff Reports

After falling to Linton last season by a score of 10-8, the Jasper softball team wanted to make sure a repeat of 2018 didn’t happen again.

The Wildcats flexed their offensive muscle as they put up 18 runs to defeat the host Miners 18-6 in their season opening game on Monday afternoon in Linton.

The Cats enjoyed a 7-0 lead after three innings before the Miners finally got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the third. Jasper answered right back with a three-spot in the top of the fourth to make it 10-2 but Linton answered again, making it 10-6 heading into the fifth.

That’s when Jasper put the finishing touches on the game as the Cats sent five runners home in the fifth inning and four in the sixth to seal the victory in just six innings.

Grace Colvin drove in four runs, Mia Werner had three RBIs, Rachel Gress, Halli Leinenbach and Madison Allen all drove in two runs each while Taylor Mitchell and Kennedy Matheis both had RBIs as well.

Madison Matheis, Colvin, Werner, Mitchell and Leinenbach all had doubles in the victory. Werner pitched a complete game on the mound giving up nine hits, five earned runs while striking out six batters.

Jasper will be back in action on Wednesday against Floyd Central.
