Car-vs-pole crash under investigation

From Local Sources

IRELAND — The Dubois County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a car-versus-utility pole accident that occurred Tuesday night on the west edge of the county.

The sheriff’s department reports that an eastbound 2005 Mitsubishi Gallant ran off Old Petersburg Road at 9:05 p.m. in a 90 degree curve north of State Road 56. The car struck a ditch before striking a Dubois Rural Cooperative utility pole.

Upon arrival, according to the sheriff’s department, there was no one around the crashed car. While attempting to get information on a possible driver, two men arrived, with one of them being the car’s owner, Jose Rodriguez Martinez, Jasper.

Rodriguez Martinez stated the car had been stolen by two males he identified as living in Washington. Rodriguez Martinez and his friend reported having followed the car in an attempt to get it back and, they said, they witnessed the crash. They allegedly stated the driver exited the wrecked Mitsubishi, got into a white Chevrolet Impala and left the scene.

Total damage was estimated to have exceeded $5,000.

A Sternberg Automotive Group wrecker towed the car.
