Car strikes backhoe in construction zoneNovember 23, 2018
From Local Sources
JASPER — Police indicated a driver’s attention was diverted when her car struck a backhoe Sunday morning on Maplecrest Boulevard south of Meridian Road.
Laura M. Grimm, 34, Huntingburg, was southbound on Maplecrest in a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix at the time of the 10:47 a.m. mishap, according to the Jasper Police Department.
Police said a 2017 Case backhoe owned by the City of Jasper was parked in a construction zone on the southbound lane of Maplecrest facing north.
Grimm advised she began to drive around the backhoe, but dropped her drink. Grimm said she leaned over to pick up the drink and then swerved to the right, sending her car into a collision with the backhoe.
Damage was estimated at $7,500 to the Pontiac, police said, while the backhoe did not appear to have been damaged.
An officer cited Grimm for not having a valid driver’s license.
