JASPER — Father Ray Brenner, pastor at St. Joseph Catholic Church, in Jasper was one of four individuals and one group to receive the Sisters of Providence’s Saint Mother Theodore Guerin Companion Award at the 19th annual Saint Mother Theodore Guerin Dinner at Saint-Mary-of-the-Woods on Saturday.
The Saint Mother Theodore Guerin Companions award was established in honor of Sisters St. Vincent Ferrer, Basilide Seneschal, Olympiade Boyer, Mary Xavier Leree and Mary Ligouri Tiercin, the five sister companions who supported Mother Theodore and remained by her side assisting her as needed while offering their own wisdom and perseverance to advance the mission.
Sister Mary Beth Klingel, also a native of Jasper, said Brenner recently celebrated his 50th Jubilee and has ministered in six different parishes in the Diocese of Evansville.
“Father Ray provides personal outreach for a growing Hispanic community in Jasper,” Sister Mary Beth said. “He also serves the sick by responding 24-7 to any request for support at local nursing homes and the hospital. In this way, he reminds us of Mother Theodore’s companion, Sister Olympiade, who was willing to step up for every task needed, including riding her horse through the neighboring village in order to visit and care for the sick.”
Brenner will retire from his post this month.
